The challenge this week for the facebook group i frequent is “Famous Paintings.” What that means is that many amazing artists (caricature and otherwise) will be creating a new spin on artwork that we have all seen ‘ad naseum’ (i’m pretty sure that phrase isn’t right) and practically could point out with our eyes covered by two blue macaws just trying to earn a few dollars to get their eggs into the country.

I chose Whistlers mother for two reasons:

1. the painting has a quiet elegance about it.  Its not loud and the color palette is pleasing to me.  Beauty in simplicity.

2. i think its funny when a painter’s study in a subject is the one the general populace remembers, and not the ones the studies were done for. (Don’t quote me or get mad; my art history is pretty rusty and i’m just making a blank assumption based on the title of the piece. I’m too tired to do the research right now)

And, just to refresh your memory, here is a picture of the painting and following that is the sketch i drew up based on it. Hopefully, i’ll have the finished by tomorrow.  You’re Welcome

Stupid Stupid Stupid taxes…..

I know i was just down that road, but Jordan just finished them and after all of our saving and budgeting, it amounted to nothing.  Everything we saved for our farm, for our FUTURE, must now go to taxes.  Back to square one i guess.  What else can you do? Make more money so more of it must be given away?  *sigh*  I guess we will just have to see where it all goes…where we go.  It is a tad disheartening though, isn’t it…

On a lighter note, i’m working on revamping my alien design for a teeshirt.  I don’t know why i’m obsessed with making them, i just want to. Don’t judge me.

Any thoughts on its teeshirt compatibility or ways to improve the design would be awesome. I know you all love it, but just cuz its good doesn’t mean it couldn’t be MORE good (better, i meant better). You’re Welcome

Let me start by acknowledging 2 people who recognized me on their sites for the blogging awards that float around the blogosphere.  I hate to say that i didn’t want to do all of the nominating and saying things about myself , but i do really appreciate it and it is a great honor to be recognized by your peers.  So thanks a million times, and if you haven’t checked out these two artists, i don’t know what you’re waiting for.  Ann Marquez and Whimsyink at Lestwentytwo: Thanks guys!

On to today’s Main event: a celebrity caricature of one of my favorite comedians, Patton Oswalt!  I love his work, his cynical take on the world, and of course his affection for all things comics and science fiction.  Like all little girls, i dream of one day shaking his hand and saying ‘hey’, but until that day i will be content to show my support by buying his albums and movies and seeing his face in every infant i draw.  He’s pretty awesome.

You’re Welcome

P.S. “My Weakness is Strong” kept me in stitches! Hilarious

The title doesn’t lie.  Today, i went to my second funeral in two days.  It wasn’t as bad as it sounds. I may sound a tad heartless, but, i didn’t really know them outside of the few memories i have of them.

The one today did hit me harder though.  She came often to our youth group when i was in high school and after most of the kids graduated or just got a bit old for it, i didn’t see her as much except for when we went caroling and visited her in her home to sing to her.  She had a brain tumor when she was very young and was perpetually 7 years old even though her last birthday cake had 30 candles on it.  She would grab our hands tight and only the people she liked most got called “turkey”.  I was called “turkey”.

Sad to say i sketched at this funeral.  I can’t always control when i get inspired and i hate to say no, like a Use it or Lose it thing.  Once you stop listening, it stops talking.  My sketchbook is always on hand, and in those blank pages, i find comfort.  I don’t regret drawing during the service, in fact, i really like the sketch i did, and in a weird way it helped distract me from the sadness and helped me to focus on what i loved about her when i knew her.

Both of these women touched so many.  Love everyone you meet while you’re here, its the only time you get, and it doesn’t make sense to waste it.   You’re Welcome

I think i’m a glutton for punishment, but i’m still using the website where i originally ran into the problem with the website that used my picture without publishing permission.  I’m very careful to ask what the image is used for (most people will come right out and tell you because they don’t know diddly when it comes to rights and all that jazz), and that this price does not give them the right to publish.  I’ve gotten less messages and gigs so i assume that my warning has weeded out anyone that would even bother asking or trying to use the image in a way that would violate that.  I WILL FIND YOU

As for my bad run with the website who did use my image improperly, they finally apologized and at least gave me credit for the image on the website, which, in the end, is all i wanted out of that whole ordeal seeing as i was not clear in the first place about the usage of the image.  People see cheap stuff and they go nuts.  Also, i have decided that i will give them nothing more than the couple of dollars worth of work. Anytime more than that is time wasted and a slight to the industry.

All any artist wants is to get their work out there and a lot of us start off by cheapening our work just so others will buy.  Keep in mind that when you price a piece of work, the buyer is not just paying for the time you spent on the piece, but also the hours and hours of hard work and practice you went through to get to this point in your style and your career.  Your experience is worth more than many of us, including myself, want to charge.  That’s my PSA for today. You’re Welcome

Yes, Jordan and i have been working hard to get stuff ready for Angry and Mad, and Yes, my hands, wrist, and back are feeling the long hours put in over my illustration desk, and Yes, i haven’t eaten in hours, BUT that hasn’t stopped me from jumping onto Minecraft, breeding some cats and pigs (respectively), killing dozens of mobs, befriending a wolf, and subsequently getting lost in a jungle because i got too caught up jumping around on the vines.  On a side note, that was a really long sentence.  Possibly a run on.  Okay, probably a run on. You’re Welcome

i can't tell how many times i've dug straight into a lava pool.

Okay, i missed it.  I saw that it was 11:58 and i exclaimed some things i care not to type while trying to get in a post for today in less than two minutes.  I know, it was a silly endeavor and i obviously was a little late. BUT, i’m not late by too terribly much so i consider it a small success.  Yay me!

All day i have been working to get ready my part of the Angry and Mad experience.  4 drawings down and 3 more to go before Sunday.  Part of that work, but not inclusive to Angry and Mad, was the completion of the tee shirt design for my old high school’s soccer team.  Didn’t turn out too bad. I would’ve rather have had outlined letters, but my gut told me they would tell me to do it the way i did in the end.  I don’t know if that made sense or not, i don’t really care, its late and you know what i probably mean….sort of… You’re Welcome
