If you have not seen the captain America movie yet, for shame. I loved every bit of it (even the cheesy ‘I can’t believe they felt they had to throw that in there’ parts) which reminded me that I haven’t shared the picture I did for my brother. Probably my favorite illustration to date.

While in high school, it was rumored that my brother Travis and his friends all adopted associations with super heroes they liked. How far these similarities went or the extent of their actual know-how about these characters is unclear, but what I do know is that my brother was Captain America. In all honesty, I can pretty much say that Travis embodies most of what people would think of upon hearing the term all- american. So in a more conceptual way, being Captain America suits him, which is how I came up with the idea for this illustration. Granted, it was Jordan’s idea to make it into a comic book which really took the design up a notch. BAM!

Here are two more sketches from the Watertown, NY fair

Taking some wise advice to heart, i decided not to post anymore wedding stuff till after the wedding on the off chance that someone attending the wedding will read this, thus spoiling the decorative surprise. Instead, i will regale all with tales of Asgard, a rainbow bridge, and the poor earthlings that Heimdall did not allow into the land of the gods.

Between our weekend in Buffalo and our week in Watertown, I somehow convinced Jordan to take me to Niagara Falls. Since Jordan has no passport (tsk tsk) we had to stay on the New York side of the Falls which turned out to be the most terrifying and sketchiest city I have EVER been too. I had my heart set on their wax museum cuz I had never been to one. At least not the kind with all the celebrities and famous people in them. This wax museum, however, will give me nightmares for probably the rest of my life. I took a bunch of pictures, but the creepiest was their interpretation of Mark Twain relaxing on his porch…

“I have candy in my lap kiddies…”

The falls themselves were a beautiful sight which we spent a lot of time at just people watching and feeling the mist on our faces. I couldnt help but marvel at the power.

Here I’m standing between the America falls and the Horseshoe falls.

So besides my envy of Canada, it’s cleanliness, and just overall better-ness, we had a wonderful and relaxing day between shows. And just to keep this about my artwork as well as my travels and goings ons, here are more sketches done at Queen of Heaven Festival in Buffalo, NY.

Less than 2 weeks

I get married in less than 2 weeks! Jordan and I both decided that we wanted to cut costs wherever possible which turned out to be an amazing opportunity to show off our creativeness. His mom, April, has been a phenomenal help in this respect. She has come up with so many wonderful ideas that are really going to help bring this wedding together.
On my end, I have been riffling through my fair share of bridal magazines and read a great article where the whole wedding was decorated with DIY paper flowers. So i decided to do paper flowers for centerpieces and bouquets also. Our colors are yellow and red ,with all colors in between, which led me to the scrapbooking section to find those colors in bulk. At michael’s, I found this lovely stack of card stock that i have now used for all parts of my wedding paper flowers

The centerpieces have been a bit of a challenge, mostly in the preliminary, not necessarily in the assembly. Myself and other Helpers cut out all the flowers by hand so they would each be unique. We cut small, medium, and large flowers which could then be mixed and matched when attached to the branches with ribbon and buttons. I loved the look I got! The flowers really make the wedding feel so much like home for me and the personal satisfaction of knowing I had a hand in decorations is very rewarding.

Last week, Jordan and i worked a fair last week in a little place in upstate new york called Watertown.  A town where everyone lives but nobody wants to be.  The only thing these people have to look forward to every year in the Jefferson County Fair, so lucky for us, business was good :)  Here’s a little taste of the work i was doing there.  I’m pretty happy with where my sketch has gone in the last year.  If you want to see my older work, i posted much of it to alirthome.blogspot.com

My life and all the arms i own have had their hands in everyplace possible due to my own inability to settle on what my profession actually is.  Lately, the picture has become clearer.  ‘Consolidation is the key’ has been my internal mantra.  Loose ends are being tied up financially and old accounts are becoming obsolete and disappearing whenever i remember that i had them in the first place.  My iPad, in this respect, is becoming my tool of choice.  The real reason i ended up on wordpress besides my need to get organized?  The app was free and user friendly. So sorry Blogspot, but the bird had to fly the coop.

The Profession i finally realized i could do is Freelance Artist, but more specifically, a CARICATURE artist.  The word takes a bit of practice to get the hang of so i’ll forgive those who are still struggling. My life is one big pile of luck, and the fates have seen fit to put caricatures into the mix.  Through other random happenstances, i now travel working at fairs and festivals, one thing i always wanted from a career, and draw, which is the second this i always wanted from a career.  Working the fair circuits has added the Fila (sp.?) to my Gumbo.

I have so many stories, artworks, and projects to share and my hope for this blog is to just practice a sort of work ethic for myself.  A small sense of normalcy in this hectic road i’ve chosen.

Besides that, i’m getting married in two weeks.

I’ll leave this first post with my most recent easel demo that i use for the fairs.
